Features & capacities

Why this line works

Design-to-machine

One CAD/CAM file drives the router and boring machine, so no part is marked or drilled by hand.

Nested for yield

Nesting puts 85–90 % of every sheet into parts, against 70–75 % on a manual saw.

Stable solid timber

In-house kiln drying to 10–12 % moisture stops doors and frames warping in Kenyan humidity.

Clean, safe air

Every machine is ducted to a central cyclone and the booth has a water curtain to capture overspray.

Zero-waste offcuts

Offcuts and bagged dust become briquettes that fire the kiln boiler or sell as clean fuel.

Flat-pack ready

Accurate CNC boring means cabinets ship flat and assemble on site with cam-locks and dowels.

Capacities

Panel throughput
35–45 sheets/day · ≈ 900 sheets/month (single shift)
Solid timber drying
15 m³ per charge · ≈ 25–30 m³/month

Utilities required

Electricity
≈ 200 kW connected (≈ 140 kVA max demand) · 415 V 3-phase

Process instructions

Standard operating procedures

The core routines operators follow, from start-up to batch release.

01Before starting work

  1. Wear safety boots, eye and ear protection, and a dust mask; tie back hair and remove loose clothing.
  2. Start the central dust extraction before any machine and check the bag filter pressure.
  3. Check blade and cutter guards, emergency stops and the air pressure at every station.
  4. Confirm fire extinguishers are in place and the booth and dust areas are clear of rags and solvent.

02Cutting & CNC

  1. Load only released nests from the CAM system; never edit a program at the machine without sign-off.
  2. Check the vacuum reading and the first sheet against the nest before running the batch.
  3. Keep hands clear of the gantry; stop the spindle before clearing chips or removing parts.
  4. On the panel saw, use the push stick and scoring blade, and never cut freehand.

03Edging, boring & sanding

  1. Let the glue pot reach temperature and run a test edge on an offcut before production.
  2. Scan the part label so the boring machine loads the correct program for that panel.
  3. Test-assemble the first carcass of every job before boring the rest.
  4. Feed the wide-belt sander at the set thickness and never stand behind it.

04Finishing, packing & dispatch

  1. Spray only inside the booth with the fans and water curtain running, and store solvents in the flammables cabinet.
  2. Record the lacquer batch, coats and drying times on the job card.
  3. Check every packed carton against the packing list and include the hardware bag and instructions.

01Executive Summary

Mbao Precision Works Ltd is a CNC woodworking factory in Ruiru, Kiambu County. It makes kitchen cabinets, wardrobes, internal doors, office furniture and flat-pack ranges for homeowners, developers, contractors and retailers across the Nairobi metro. One CAD/CAM file runs through the whole factory, from design to nesting, CNC routing, edge banding and six-sided boring, so the company can offer factory-grade accuracy, repeatable quality and 10–15 day lead times, something most local carpenters cannot match.

Key assumptions: KES 130/US$. Capacity use of 40% in Year 1, 60% in Year 2 and 80% in Year 3. Material share falls as nesting yield improves and briquettes replace bought fuel. Payback is about 3 years on a cash basis (net profit plus depreciation).

06Market Analysis & Opportunity

Kenya's furniture demand is driven by urbanisation, the Affordable Housing Programme and a steady stream of new apartment blocks around Nairobi, Kiambu and Machakos. Every new home needs a kitchen, wardrobes and doors. Most of this work is still done by informal carpenters with hand tools, while mid- and upper-market buyers turn to imported flat-pack and ready-made furniture. A local CNC factory can match imported precision at shorter lead times, and it can make furniture to the exact dimensions of each room.

Market Sizing (estimates)

TierDefinitionValue (KES)
TAMKenya furniture, fitted kitchens, wardrobes and doors≈ 70 billion
SAMNairobi metro fitted furniture + panel-based furniture≈ 22 billion

Competitive Position

Established furniture brandsShowrooms, brand trustPremium pricing, limited custom sizing
Imported flat-pack (China, Turkey, Malaysia)Low unit price, modern designsFixed sizes, 8-12 week restock, weak after-sales
Informal carpenters (jua kali)Lowest cost, flexibleInconsistent quality, green timber, poor edges
Kitchen specialist importersHigh-end finishesVery high price, long lead times

Growth Drivers

  • Housing pipeline: Developers need repeat kitchens and wardrobes built to a consistent standard
  • Import substitution: Duties on finished furniture favour local panel processing
  • Contract CNC cutting: Small carpenters pay to have their boards cut, edged and bored accurately
  • Online retail: Flat-pack ships cheaply through e-commerce and courier networks

Differentiation: Made-to-measure at close to flat-pack prices, kiln-dried timber, 3D design previews before ordering, 10-15 day lead times, and a 5-year carcass warranty.
